The Kentucky Derby is the first Saturday in May every year and Mint Juleps are a must! My husband was born and raised in Louisville so he has the perfect Mint Julep recipe.

Ingredients
Everything is a 1:1 ratio
1 cup of water
1 cup of sugar
1 cups of fresh mint (Spearmint) with stems and leaves
1 cup of Bourbon (we prefer Makers Mark) add more to your taste
Extra mint for garnish
Lots of pebble ice
This would make just shy of 4 mint juleps (about 6oz each)
Steps
Bring water to a boil in a large pot on the stove.
Add sugar to water and stir to dissolve to make simple syrup.
Remove from heat
In a very large bowl put the mint and pour the hot simple syrup mixture over the mint and stir.
Allow the mixture to come to room temperature then cover and put in the fridge.
Leave in the fridge for at least 8 - 12 hours. It should have a slight green hue to it.
Strain the mint leaves and stems out and set the liquid aside. Discard the mint.
Add your bourbon at this point. You can mix it all together in the julep mix or just add individually to drinks according to your bourbon strength preference
Garnish with fresh mint and enjoy!
Tips
You can get bags of pebble ice at Sonic or Chick-fil-a
Start with 1:1 ratio of bourbon but you may want more bourbon. It is rather sweet at just the 1:1 ratio.
The simple syrup mixture with mint will keep for about 10 days in the fridge
